From 1999 till 2004 he worked as an assistant professor at the Ruhr-University Bochum, Department of Social Science, where he obtained his doctorate degree (Dr.rer.soc.). In February 2005 he finished his "Habilitation" (second doctoral dissertation) and obtained the venia legendi in social science methodology and statistics. Since November 2004 he is a scientific officier of the Statistical Office of North Rhine Westphalia (IT.NRW, Düsseldorf) and since March 2003 also a permanent visiting fellow of the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin).

The German Socio-economic Panel (GSOEP) is a longitudinal study, which contains detailed interviewer data allowing one to form an interviewer panel and to identify interviewer effects. In this paper the interviewer data set of the GSOEP is described for the first time and an exemplary longitudinal analysis toward interviewer behavior will be presented. For the subjective indicators we find some effects of interviewer characteristics and learning effects by respondents as well as interviewers. However, in multivariate analysis the coefficients of typical research interest are not biased by omitting these effects.

ZUMA Nachrichten, No. 46, p.117-150.

The following study describes the process of non-response in the first wave in the German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP). Multilevel statistical modelling is used to explore the influence of characteristics of respondents and interviewers on nonresponse and refusal rates. In addition, a further distinction between first treatment (contact) and followup treatment (contact) allows us to analyse the converted respondents who first decided to refuse but then did participate when contacted again.

Schräpler, Jörg-Peter (1996). Eine empirische Erklärung von formalen Antwortstilen. In: Kölner Zeitschrift für Soziologie und Sozialpsychologie, Vol. 49, No. 4, p.728-746.

Often in methodical analysis acquiescense has been conceptualized as a response set and a generalized tendency to be agreeable but has been operationally defined as a response style in terms of a disproportional tendency to select a certain response category. Using questions of satisfaction and attitude of the German Socio Economic Panel (GSOEP) it is shown that both forms of response bias have different reasons and that they have to be interpreted in a differentiated manner. In this study the response sets are mostly independent of the data collection methods. They rather depend on the tendency of poorly educated people to be uncritical of sweeping statements. The identified response styles on the other hand are mainly the result of a quickly held face-to-face interview. In addition to the identification and explanation of both forms of bias there is also a discussion of possible effects on empirical analysis.
